Under the auspices of the President of Koya University Prof. Dr. Wali M. Hamad, the Department of Law, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, in collaboration with Zhnan-Women’s Union of Kurdistan and The KRG’s High Council of Women Affairs has organized a workshop under the title of: The Status of Women in Sharia & Law and their Roles, on Monday, 08 March 2021. The workshop started at 10:00 am which lasted for 3 hours and 3o minutes at the University’s Presidency’s Hall. Needless to mention that a number of nearly 200 participants inclusive of guests, students, academic staffs and other participants from both inside and outside of the University attended the workshop.
The workshop started with a welcome speech by the University’s President firstly, a speaker on behalf of KRG’s High Council of Women Affairs secondly, and a speaker on behalf of Zhnan-Women’s Union of Kurdistan, Erbil Branch, lastly. Shortly after that, according to the planned schedule, there were two main panels for the speakers. The first panel was dedicated to the Legal Status of Woman and their Roles and Participations in the Decision Making Process in the Kurdistan Region’s Institutions. The panel was chaired by Dr Zhala Jawhar, Lecturer at the Department of Law, Koya University.
In this panel, three speakers from outside of the University were invited to the stage. They were: Dr. Safaadding M. Gaznai, an Advisor of the KRG’s Parliament. Dr. Gaznai’s topic was on the Challenges and Achievements of Women in KRG’s Legislation. He was followed by Ms Fenek Namik Hamad, from Zhnan-Women’s Union of Kurdistan, Erbil Branch, talked about Solving Problems and Barriers in front of Developing Women’s [Status]. Finally, Ms Dlkhwaz Abdullah, a member of The KRG’s High Council of Women Affairs talked about Women’s Roles and Influences in the in the Decision Making Process in the Kurdistan Region’s Institutions.
After a short break and refreshments for 15 minutes, the second panel started at 11:30am which was dedicated for Women Status in Shariah. The panel was chaired by Dr Awat Kamal, Lecturer at the Department of Law, Koya University. In this panel, two speakers from the Department of Law, Koya University were invited to the stage. The first one was Prof Dr. Jawad Faqe, who talked about the [Shariah] Ruling on Killing Women under the Pretext of Honor. The second speaker was Dr Rebwar Hameed, from the same department, talked about Some Phenomenon in Kurdish Society [taken] against women, which are opposite to the Quran and Sunnah texts. After a number of questions and comments from the audience, the second panel was concluded. Later on, certificates of appreciations were awarded to all the speakers of the two panels. The Workshop formally ended at 13:30.
Last but not least, the University provided 104 certificates of participation (CAD) to the participants.
