A teacher from Koya University prints and publishes a book about gentrification and displacement process: a case study of Erbil city. This newsletter provides detailed information about this book. Ms. Dedar Koshnaw, a teacher at the Faculty of Engineering/ Department of Architectural Engineering answers the questions about her book with great confidence.
The story behind this book!
In answer to the question why she had chosen that topic, Ms. Khoshnaw says“There was not such a research previously, and What types of gentrification (mediated or unmediated) and displacement (direct or indirect) are happening in the case study? Moreover, the impact of gentrification on living conditions and household facilities, the impact of gentrification on neighbourhood income and social classes, the impact of gentrification on the physical character of the area and the loss of heritage value. Finally, the impact of gentrification on bringing back residents to the inner-city.
Is there any private story behind choosing the research?
In my work experience in Erbil Citadel and Ministry of Municipality, the General Directorate of Urban Planning, I saw many lacks and shortages in this discipline, in terms of land distribution, sociocultural, displacement of residents then ruining the houses and constructing other buildings in their places without any previous planning.
In my real life I lived in an area which passed through this process, I felt and saw the positive and negative points of this process lively.”
Referring to the outcomes of her research, Dedar says“As my case study was from both areas where gentrified and displaced by the government and the developers, after analyzing both areas, I found some positive and negative points by both gentrifiers. To associate both in a right process, we have to think about another way for displacing the residents, by replacing them temporarily, until their previous houses regenerate then take them back to the original place. Perpendicularly, they will progress socially, economically and culturally.”
Abstract
Economic improvement is the main goal of each person, and gentrification is one way that people can achieve their goals, because it is a dynamic phenomenon that is continually developing and expanding to take advantage of new opportunities for changing economy for better. Usually, from the perspective of the developers and local agencies gentrification has an overwhelmingly positive impact on the residents, and they think it is the way to promote residents from the working-class to the middle-class.
With regard to the main points of her research, Ms. Khoshnaw says,
“This process has a vital role in progressing residents, developers, even government, socially, economically and culturally. Erbil city has already passed through this process, unfortunately none of those three clients could not take benefit as need.”
